HI everyone,

First post here, since so far I've been fortunate enough to be able to figure out issues with the car on my own. I drive a 2013 Volvo S60 T5, has about 90,000 miles. The other day I got a "SRS Airbag Service Urgent" message, and took the car over to my neighborhood mechanic. They told me that the issue is that the seat belt tensioner and pre-tensioner need to be replaced, and it is about a 1200 dollar job, mainly because the tensioner is very expensive and a special order part that is hard to get. To those in the know, does this sound right? I put in a call to my Volvo service advisor, but haven't heard back from them yet. I've done a few online searches for the part, but have only seemed to find used units.

Mainly, I'm just trying to figure out if I am being overcharged or not. I'm more than happy to wrench on cars myself, but I generally avoid working on safety equipment.

What exact code, which seatbelt?

 

Driver's side, and the code is:

B0002-1B Driver Frontal Stage 2 Deployment Control General Electical Failure

 

Volvo says code b00021b - is a trouble code related to the DRIVERS AIR BAG in the steering wheel. Many possible causes, but replacing the drivers seatbelt will not fix it. Are you sure about you choice of Technician?

Possible source - connections or problem with contact reel. Have seen/replaced many bad contact reels. Easy to test. Contact reel part number is 31313818 or 31343218 depending on your VIN.

 

No, I am not sure about the technician. It is my neighborhood mechanic, right down the road...they've always been good with domestic cars, but just barely started offering repair work on European vehicles.
