Turbo Problem
Hello all;
I have a 2006 S60 AWD. I have the car at the dealer and they are telling me that the turbo is shot and I need a new one. (They originally were telling me that I needed a new catalytic converter, which is covered by some Federal Clean Air requirement, so I don't have to pay for it.) The total cost (parts/labor) for the turbo unit will be around $2,500. The car has 73k miles on it.
I find it hard to believe that I need a new turbo unit after 73,000 miles. Has anyone else had the same problem? Should this be a warranty item, even though the car is out of warranty?

Get a second opinion, turbos rarely fail at those miles unless abused or low engine pressure.
Cat converter is covered for 8 years, unlimited miles, so the dealer probably wants some good money out of you.

You can also find a used Turbo from salavge yard for $250 or so . This is the issue i have found when useing the dealer on used"older" Volvos its always a $1000+ issue with them. Look for a local forgien auto Indy and have them take a look at it. Like what was said i would have a hard time see the Turbo die they are very well made and with out someone touching it there's not a lot that can go wrong with it.
Serious loss of power. The dealer was replacing the catalytic converter, thinking that it was damaged/clogged. There was some rattling noises, so they thought that was the cause.
Once they removed the pipe coming out of the turbo, they noticed that the waste gate was rattling. They said that the problem would get progressively worse.

No, I'm just curious if it was just really loose. Do they say it's the wastegate actuator or the wastegate in the turbo it's self? Cause you should be able to replace the wastegate actuator and if it's the wastegate in the exhaust housing, you can replace that by itself. You can find one at a wrecking yard or they come up for sale from time to time.
Really get a second opinion. It really sounds like you're dealer is just trying to make some money off you.

Check to make sure your intake piping is all on and tight. Air filter housing to Turbo, Turbo to Hot side intercooler, intercooler to intake manifold. Good chance of the pipe from intercooler to intake manifold is loose at the intake manifold. Not much to clamp onto there.
