1998 Rear Brake Ringing
Hi, Everybody,
The car in question is a 1998 S70. The owner has been complaining about a ringing noise, and it does exist, almost like a lubricated finger sliding around the rim of a crystal goblet.
It turns out the brake shoe has a device which keeps it from maintaining contact with the drum, and this device is rusted away/broken, and the shoe constantly makes contact with the drum and emits a very obnoxious tone.
All my schematics show only rotors and discs.
Can anyone shed light on this, and possibly give me a part number of the part to replace?
Thank you.
Bill

by brake shoe, I am assuming you are referring to the parking brake set up? the 98s should be same as the 850s. RobertDIY has some vids on youtube to show how to adjust etc. Sounds like you need to replace the parking brake springs and clips. Check out Volvo friendly sites for the various parts - shoes, expander, springs, adjuster, hold down spring etc.
Volvotips.com should have a service diagram (look at the 850) and try googling "volvo 9157979" to find parts pages. (that's the OEM number for the hold down clip...)
You need to remove the rim, caliper and rotor to get at the parking brake components - but its pretty much typical to any other drum brake set up (meaning its tedious to get the shoes/springs to snap in without some handy brake tools).

mt,
Thank you for your reply.
Yes, of course you are correct it is the parking brake.
Apparently where the clip to align the shoe is connected rust has won the battle, and the shoe does not sit in the proper position.
We have jerry-rigged the shoe and will not have the use of the handbrake.
It's a autobox so we can live without it.
Does anyone have a p/n for that plate?

Check volvo friendly sites like FCP Euro, IPD USA or one of the dealer web stores - google the string I suggested and you'll find sites who also provide the OEM part numbers and have component diagrams. You may be best off working with a dealer's site or worst case see if you can find something used. Part should be the same for 850s, V/S70s and C70s from 95 to 02ish...
