1999 s70 radiator fluid/coolant trouble
Hey,
I have a 1999 s70, with 150,000 km on it.
I have owned it for two years, and from time to time a fan will continue to run after the engine has been turned off (typically for about 5 minutes, extremely loud). It occurs for about a month straight; this fan running in the engine even after the car has been turned off. Then it just seems to stop...until it happens again for about a month.
I never used to worry about it, but now my radiator fluid/coolant light is coming on all the time. I am losing fluid rapidly (fill up every week), but I took it to a shop and they said it was not coming out the bottom (ie. not a cracked tank), but perhaps it was going into the engine: no way to tell without spending a whole lot to get right in there and look.
Perhaps the fan and the fluid loss are related? Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Im not sure I am qualified to answer your question but I can tell you that I had the same problem on my 2000 S70 GLT SE. Coolant was being lost and fan would run after engine was off. Eventually I found a hairline crack in radiator. Replaced radiator, upper and lower hoses and water pump (did timing belt too) and I dont have those issues any more. I live in a tropical climate and it is HOT during summers
No way to tell if it's going in the engine with out "get right in there"????? get another mechanic, shouldn't take long or cost anything (or very little). most likely the heater core. they leak under the carpet. feel around. also run the defroster and see if the windshield gets damp.
hey guys,
so yesterday i started my car, backed out, and walked over to the fresh snow I had been parked on; there were two fresh drips of coolant, about two feet apart from one another. seemed like one was from underneath the radiator, and one from underneath the coolant tank.
maybe it only leaks on start-up?
either way, I am going to the mechanic tomorrow and I will update the situation afterwards...
