Default abs/tracs

I have a 1998 S70 T-5 with about 93,000 miles. Recently, the ABS and TRACS lights have come on simultaneously. this is an intermittent problem, but is becoming more pronounced. A quick review of this bulletin board indicates that the consensus normally is a bad ABS module. (we also have a 1995 850 GLT with about 85,000 miles that curiously developed the same problem at about the same time.)

my Haynes manual for the 95 850 indicates that trouble codes should be stored in the OBD II system to help diagnose the problem. However, when I tried to pull the codes with my reader, the reader indicated that no codes were stored.

I assume may bad ABS wheel sensor could also cause this problem. in other words, I don't want to start swapping parts indiscriminately without a better idea of what the problem might be.

So here are my questions?

1. Should this problem be generating trouble codes. If so, why are none showing up on my code reader?

2. If no codes are stored, what's the best way to diagnose what is causing this problem.

Does your scanner read ABS codes?
If not then you won't see codes.

No sure what codes the scanner reads. It's an Actron scanner and the manual indicates it reads B, C, U and P codes.

But if you can't get into the ABS module then you can't read the codes.
I will bet it only reads engine codes.

Okay. So playing the odds, would you go with a reconditioned ABS module?

On the S70 YES.
Look on here there is many places that you can send it and have it rebuilt for $100.00 or less.

At work we do Atleast 4 or more ABS modules a week.

ok about the s70

Any suggestions about the 95 850? I get the impression that the brake and mechanical systems in the 850's and s70's of those vintages are basically the same.

thanks for your help

Look at the module on the 850 if it is in the same location as the S70 then yes I agree.
But if it is up next to the fluid bottle then no.

You can pull codes on the 850 if it still has OBDI.
1995 was a split year for OBDI and OBDII.
Follow link to pull codes.

if u got the actron scanner at oreily it will not read the abs codes. i have it & another actron which specifically reads abs codes & it shows them (i have the same problem with the abs on my s70 and s80) try the cruise control when the lights are on. if the cruise dosen't work then it should be the module for sure. i just send in my s80 one to this guy, hopefully will turn out ok

put the module back in & everything works ok. all the lights are off, no more codes in computer. the only thing is the cruise control isn't working so i need to email & ask them what's up with that. we'll c how the car does the next few days but so far it's good.

Make sure there is no codes in the engine module.

If there is that could stop the cruise from working.

look on my above posts. click the link to ebay. although the auction has ended, you can email the seller & arrange the deal with him. these guys do a very good job! there's no options to choose from except you can have them send you an already rebuilt unit when they get yours but then it's more expensive. you'r fine to drive the car w/out the module, just be extra cerful.
thanks,veso
