actuator works and sounds strong. the only problem is that the door will not pop open. when i close it it locks with no problem. am i missing something?

i cut up a metal coat hanger and made something similar to a spring. it works and the gas door now pops open. i saved a few extra dollars and most importantly i didnt have to wait for a part to come in the mail.
