Default oil pump noise

Hi to all,
Finally I have located the source of engine cold start noise (2 min. whine, then abruptly shuts off)-it is coming from the oil pump (with a stethoscope attached to the oil cooler hose) . However, I am not shure what needs replacement- pump, which almost never go bad on these cars (98' T5, 46K), cooling thermostat or just drop the pan and take care of that O-ring on the pick up tube? Any ideas? Thanks.

Oil pressure is good. I think the sound is being created by the oil thermostat. There might be some oil bypassing through and that may cause this whining. Not shure.Trying to find new stat and replace it. Will post if it helps. Thanks.
