Default PCV Clog

Hey all,

The other day I noticed an oil leak on the top of my engine block (spark plug area), and replaced the oil cap, and cleaned all the oil from under the spark plug cover, drove to work and again smelled burnt oil and more oil was on the engine. So upon investigating I see that it is most likely my PCV that is clogged. I cant tell where the oil is coming from, but it is burning off a lot. i did the test by putting a rubber glove over the filler neck, and at idle it ballooned the glove right up. Does anyone know if it blew a seal to be putting that much oil onto the head, and how much it would cost to repair it, I've seen quotes of $800 to replace the pcv system, and along with a blown seal!!! Can anyone lend a opinion on this situation. Any help is appreciated, and also is it safe to drive temporarily??

Thanks

Welcome to the forum ZE

It's usually the type of question that gets posted under the cars subsection rather than "General Chat".

It's likely the PCV system is plugged and it's pushing oil out the oil fill.
The black box (PCV) usually doesn't plug but the vacuum lines and the PTC (if turbo) can get restricted and then you build pressure. I'm speaking of 2.3/2.5/2.5 engines.

What year, model and engine are we talking about in your case

If you are already experiencing oil leaking, it is bad. Get the system replaced as soon as possible or replace it yourself. Not sure if there is anything else that can be recommended.

Would it cost a lot to actually replace the system. I saw that it is about 160 for parts, but Ik it's rather laborious to get to the system. And would the engine have to be resealed?. I've heard estimates of close to 800 to replace the system

Your idea of a lot and mine might be quite different. I do my own work so I can't speak to what it might cost but a call to a dealer and an independent or two would tell you exactly what it would cost on your car in your area.
You might also try an automotive vo-tech school in your area if there is one to see if it's something they would do for you. Usually you only pay for parts.

Then you'd want to clean off the engine and monitor it to see if you still have any leaks that need attention.

In the amount of time that you have been thinking about, blogging about it, and dreading it, you could have done the job and had a beer or two.

Need to make that repair step perfectly clear. Beer after repair not before
