What are the odds if timing belt jumped time (came partially off) and it didn't screw up the motor. Belt wore thru the side cover even, but not all the way off. Probably will be looking for a new engine soon. Pete with more than weird problem. Still can't understand how adj seat could have done that, or just bad timing. Any way to know how bad the motor is before tearing it down? Pete

 

An adjustable seat has nothing to do with the timing belt. You most likely bent valves. Only way to tell is to re-time it and see how it runs and check compression or cylinder leakage.

 

OK, would be worth a try. After seeing belt problem I am sure didn't have anything to do with seat. The timing was perfect though. no pun intended

 

The timing belt moving like that usually indicates a pulley bearing starting to fail. If it has started to move it will likely continue to move. Moving does not mean it skipped a tooth.

How old is the belt (mileage)? I think its rated for 70K miles. However, some people don't replace all the components. Personally, I replace everything to avoid problems liek that - including the water pump.

 

What year model car is it? If the belt didn't come all the way off you may be ok.

 

My S70 is a 98 with about 90k Also figured out tonight that it is the starter and not just the selonoid turning but not engine. Starter must be bad or armature broke or flywheel lost some teeth. Will have to take off and inspect. Belt looks like it was working its way off and actually burning thru the plastic casing. Pete

 

Have only had this volvo for about 7 or 8 months but put 9000 miles on it. Might have to pull out the 76 SW. Pete

 

Unless the belt looks absolutely brand new or you KNOW the prior owner replaced the timing belt, it needs replacing asap. I think its 70K for the belt. If the belt falls off or breaks the head WILL be damaged and that WILL be very expensive. If you replace the belt, buy a full kit - idler, tensioner, belt,etc. You could probably skip the water pump if money is an issue.

Word of caution on the starter. I replaced it and not all parts places have the right starter. Pull it out and check the teeth first. If the teeth are broken (not likely) there is no point replacing the starter. If the teeth are good then get the starter. I would not do the exchange until after you are SURE the new starter works correctly. If its something else you can send the new unit back. Just make sure the new unit matches the old unit. I know Advanced Auto does nto list the right unit. Autozone did.

 

I've actually seen the cams off 5 teeth and they didn't bend valves. So just regime the engine and do a compression test.

Yeah really, what does the adjustable seat has to do with the timing belt. Run a check on the cylinders as mentioned above, that'd be a great idea and will do some good to you.

 

So what is the story behind the timing belt? None of this other stuff floating around. Did the car stall or cut off?
