Default S70 T5 Misfiring/dies/sputters

Hey everyone! I am new to VF, but not so new to Volvo's as my current car a S70T5 is my 4th Volvo in 10 years.

The reason for my posting is as follows. I have noticed in the past couple months (mainly on idle) that the car sputters a little (RPM's fluctuate between 1100 and 500, it quickly corrects itself and runs fine. Very recently upon start-up I have noticed when I try to take off, no matter how much I peg the accelerator I get no response for 3-5 seconds, just an idling forward motion.

Last week the car died on my wife, she was able to pull over, restart it, and was on her way.

A couple days ago, my laboring wife and I were headed home, down the road 1/2 a mile away from the house, and the car died. (hahaha, I know)

I let the car sit for a couple days while we were in the hospital with our new son.

When I went back, it started, but it was running very rough. I drove away with my father-in-law following me home, he stated it smoked a little on start up(dont know what color) and smelled very rich the entire way home.

Can anyone give me some adivce on where to start? I just pulled the cam cover off and looked inside the spark wells, and they are clean and dry...
Car smells like it is running rich, so I know its getting fuel.

Thanks a lot guys.

Z

MY (Model Year) would be critically important info here. Also is CEL on/working? If so, have you pulled the codes?

My apologies, Vehicle year is 98. CEL is on, but I can't get it to AutoZone to have the codes read. Guess I need to pony up and buy one.

Need to pull the code(s) and go from there..

Are you a DIYer or no? If not, may as well just take it to a good indy shop. The '98's are fairly easy to work on but I don't know your experience level, what you have for tools, etc.
