Default Source of Gas Guage failure

Guage on my XC70 1998 has finally failed after working intermittedly and registering low for a couple months. Think it must be an electrical connection. Any suggestions as to how to go about trouble shooting this?

Sorry to say it must be a bad sending unit. Also sad to say the tank needs to be dropped or you need to cut a hole in the floor board from inside.

Volvo dealer says there is a trap door on this model so I will look for it. I assume there is no on line parts diagram for the car.

If it is the XC70 like you stated above there is no access panel. The normal V70 has it but the AWD one does not.
