I like the looks of this forum, I owned a couple of Volvos years back, and I'm considering buying a 1998 S70, manual trans, 140,000 miles. Price is okay.

I just went through the postings and didn't find a "check list" of things to look for when buying a used S70 like this one. Is there such a posting?

Will I need an instrument to pull the codes if I have the opportunity?

I would say check the indicator lights on the dashboard, what I know that the S 70 and V 70 on that year model have a short live for the ABS module, also make sure the "service soon" light turn on before you start the engine and turn off after the engine running (some car have problem with the engine and that indicator light stays on after the engine running, but some of them just pull out the bulb so we don't notice about the problem)

The clutch would be a big one. Make sure it isn't bad (has difficulty catching gear). I've read many reports stating that is around the mileage it needs to be replaced.

 

140,000 is time for the 2nd timing belt change. It's also about the time that the evaporator goes bad needs replaced, about $1300-1500. See if these things have already been done. Robert213 has a checklist on the 850 forum and the 98 S70 is basically the same. Look at that and you will see other things to look out for.
