Before you go through all that hassel, try putting some tire shine on the molding. It's an old detailers trick. I used Meguiars Tire Shine on all the exterior black trim and it looks new! It was extremely faded before. It's cheap, easy and something you may already have on hand!

 

qYeah I tried the tire shine, and it helped but its washed off now and it didnt really darken it. The die will actually blacken it.

I got my headlights and taillights done last night and my god is it badass.

Ill post pictures later.

Looks like I will be going to the dealer to have the day time running lights disabled afterall.

 

I just ordered a bottle of the dye last night.. tyre shine didnt do the trick for me either.

Soon we will see how good the dye is cause mine are pretty damn faded haha

 

Sorry for not responding sooner! I was out of town...U know what, for the longest time I have been using Mothers back to black to bring the gray out of the faded areas. It does work but when it rains it does wash out! Yes! I bought a bottle and it was just enough to do the whole car (2 coats) and has a little left over. You WILL like the results!

Sorry for the crappy pics... cellphone is the only camera I have at the moment. The rears are actually much darker and almost completely black... the sun was hitting them at an angle so it was glowing a little red.

I did notice a small difference in headlight brightness but not a whole lot. The lights were VERY bright to begin with (Sylvania ultra pure whites or whatever) and even though they are properly aligned, I still was flashed often. 5K HIDs should fix whatever bit of a dimming issue I have.

The trim dye should be here this week, and HOPEFULLY I can get my window tint done sometime in April. $$$'s tight ya know.

I can't wait to get these god awful wheels off this car.

I live in South Raleigh (NCSU Area) and work in Cary

I bought the VHT Spray on Window Tint from Summit Racing. (NOT Nightshades... which is the actual light tint)

I just taped everything off, then masked with paper, and sprayed, and sprayed and sprayed. The stuff is supposed to be sprayed on very thick and allowed to "run" down the light.

I did not tape off my bumpers enough because it ran through the paper. Now yes it was only phone book paper but its 5 sheets thick everywhere and that wasnt enough. I would suggest using wax paper... And make sure if you are doing it in your drive way you have something on the ground because the stuff runs really bad... and you have to spray it on THICK.

Now my headlights have some streaking but I don't want to put another coat on it so I'm just going to live with it for now.

For those of you that bought the dye, did you go with the black or the gray. I am assuming that the OP went with black, but the website says for Volvo owners they now offer gray. Is the molding on the S80 black or gray? If gray would the black dye work and look ok?

I have seen on the 850's grey and a few in black... I belive the S80's I have seen for the most part are black. I think if it was grey and you used the dye it would look ok AS LONG AS YOU had it sprayed and not applied with a sponge. Also, normally when applying the same color one bottle will suffice but if you were doing black on grey molding, you might need 2 bottles to go over a few coats. My 850 used up 2/3 of a bottle with 2 coats on the molding and leaving some left over.

 

Yeah mine has some serious "splotting" issues in the molding. I don't know if this dye is going to evenly color it.

I'm going to try it on the rear bumper first, and if it just doesn't look right I'm going to end up spray painting the whole thing with flat black Krylon Fusion (for plastics).

I would LOVE to sand the moulding down smooth and get it sprayed with actual gloss automotive paint and clear coat, but I don't have the time. I'm fine with it flat/textured as long as its black.

 

What do u mean by "splotting"?

 

You know poor_red_neck, I have the same exact issue in the moulding around the windows etc. The lower trim on the door itself doesnt have the problem half as much, I am assuming directly realted to the amount of sun that it took over the years.

My bottle is on the way so I can only hope that it works out.. but splotting or not, I expect it to look better after than before.

Splotting would be patches which are lighter and darker than others.. i guess something like random spots with different colour in a disorderly fashion? A picture will show this 100x better..

More like spots that look blotted. Just random areas that are lighter. Usually on corners or something.

I just got my bottle in today. I didnt pay attention to the size. The bottle is alot smaller than I thought.

Its raining for the next 3 days here so Ill try to do it on sunday or monday. Ill be sure to post before and after pics.

Im going to hate seeing the car with everything blacked out and those ****ty wheels. Its honestly going to take a while for me to afford the wheels even the replicas. I used to do part time work on computers but with this whole economy BS going on my business has gone to 0.

 

Hey, don't worry! I had some anxiety when I saw the bottle too, but it worked out.. I have 1/3 left for touch ups. Not that I need to. Make sure that it's sunny and dry outside with no humidity for that dye to set in right.

 

Only problem I see is I got some leakage with the headlight spray so im worried it wont match or actually dye there.

 

Easy fix..... Take some rubbing alcohol to clean off any "gunk" that might be on there. and then take a blowdrier to dry off exess moisture. Also when you are done applying dye to the spray area, take the blow dryer and hit it on low heat. Don't use high heat as that might mess up the prayer head! I would also suggest prior to applying, you're going to need to wash it. Well after the cleaning, let it sit in the sun for a few minutes so the trim is a little warm. This will help too..You don't need to do it if it's not sunny.
