Hi, I have a 2000 S80 2.9 (non-turbo). Occasionally it won't start. I turn the key and just hear a weak clicking sound. On the second or third try it usually starts. But one day it didn't start after several tries and I had to let it rest at a supermarket parking lot for a day. Then it started.

I took it to a Volvo dealer today. They told me they had to keep it for a day, or at least until it starts "not starting" to figure out the problem. I decided to leave and take it back some other day, but the car wouldn't start! Two technicians tried several times, no luck. Then one of them opened the hood, played with the red starter wire, and the car started then and the next 6-7 times. The dealer still says I have to let it stay there for a day to figure out the problem.

Does anyone have any insights as to what the problem might be?

sounds like the soleniod is not making clean contact so your starter would get it's power to turn. It should be really easy to troubleshoot. Unless it's much more than the starter & soleniod issue. A simple way to look at it, if a car doesn't start with only a clicking sound, then it's either low battery or starter problem.

 

Let them hang onto the car for a couple days. That way they'll be able to properly troubleshoot the problem. I would think that they may be able to work out a "service car" for you to use until they complete their troubleshooting.
