Default Are S80 transmissions junk?

Looking at a couple 2000 S80's with transmission issues. One is stuck in second and the other has to be manually shifted. A google search shows a 50/50 split of either "replace tranny" or "replace solenoid." So before I go out and get a "deal", are the transmissions junk? Or just that particular model year?

They aren't as problematic as they are in the T6 XC90s by any means

dont buy older S80..thats all i can say. If you want to buy older design S80 then go for 2005-2006 year models. spend some $$$ and a S80 with better reliable .
