Default s80 vvt question before reinstall of machined head

Good morning.
First post(thank you in advance.
My 2001 s80 overheated and now i am changing gasket and having head machined.
I did not remove vvt gear from cam on disassembly.
Can i renistall cam back the way it came off?
Or do i have to go through the whole process of adjusting VVT?
Thank you again.
Brian.
Also why is piston half way down bore at TDC????(strange)

In order to replace the cam seal, you'll need to remove the CVVT.

The piston is not halfway down the bore at TDC. TDC is Top Dead Center. So if the piston is halfway down the bore, it isn't at TDC. The engine also is not timed at TDC.

Default TDC on s80

When the timing mark on crankshaft is lined up, piston is half way down the bore? Volvo makes there timing marks very difficult to see.
I was also wondering if the cvvt has any spring loaded action inside of it.?
It rotates freely about half an inch, is this normal?
TY.

Default TDC confusion.

So when all three timing marks are lined up correctly the piston will not be at TDC on cylinder 1?

Yes, the engine is not timed at TDC. The piston shouldn't be that far down though I don't think. I don't remember off hand. I just line up the marks. If I'm doing a head, I use the special tools.

if the cvvt was not disrupted as to position on disassembly, do you still have to go through cvvt adjustment?
It seems there are many different opinions as how to set cvvt.
If cAMS WERE REMOVED WITH OUT LOOSENING THREE BOLTS ON CVVT, DO YOU STILL HAVE TO TO RESET IT?

I was also curious if the cvvt had spring tension to it?
Mine move back and forth but does not have any tension to it.(thank you)

The three bolts are for the toothed gear only, not the CVVT hub. The CVVT hub is held to the cam with one larger bolt.

The process to set up the CVVT hub is different for different years. In theory, if you didn't unbolt it from the cam, it should be fine. I've never tested it though because I'd rather do the job correctly once than take shortcuts and have a leaking cam seal or other issue with the CVVT just because I wanted to save 15 minutes.
