Default Volvo s80 HeadGasket replacement

Hi everyone

I really need some help here, I bought a 2002 S80 for my father it is a 2.9 non-turbo which needed a new engine.

I got an engine with 38K miles on it and when I replaced the timing belt didn't tension the tensioner and bent my valves.

I sent the head away got the valves off my old head and had them replace them. I installed my head, I have set my timing spot on and my car still wont start. I did a compression test just on cylinder 1 and found no compression but I have heaps of compression coming out my exhaust (my exhaust manifolds are off)

I spoke to a friend of mine who seems to think that it is my lifters and they are stuck. So he told me just to keep trying, as I do I have to admit it does sound like it wants to start.

I also have a P0340 Camshaft Position Sensor error and was told that could be my problem

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Answer these questions.

Did you remove the cams?
If you removed the cams, did you mark them?
Did you remove the cam sprockets?
If you removed the sprockets, did you mark them?
The intake and exhaust cams are not interchangeable, neither are the sprockets.
If you rotated the engine with the cams swapped or the cam sprockets swapped or timing off,you probably bent the valves Again.
After installing a new timing belt, always rotate the engine over a couple a times by hand before trying to start it.

Default Thanks so much for the reply really need any help I can get

Ok so I got a friend of my sisters who is a mechanic to come over and he found my problem but has not worked on Volvo's so doesn't know exactly how to set it.

My variable timing was the problem I had it turned all the way anticlockwise before I out the belt on, he turned it clockwise and then put the belt on, we now have around 85 compression.

I read somewhere that I have to turn my timing after setting it to 0, 90 degrees clockwise and then 90 degrees anticlockwise and then make sure that my variable timing is always fully clockwise.

Can anybody shine some light on this?

Did you remove the cams? yes
If you removed the cams, did you mark them? no, just thought I could install them back on my timing marks
Did you remove the cam sprockets? yes
If you removed the sprockets, did you mark them? yes
The intake and exhaust cams are not interchangeable, neither are the sprockets. I know

After installing a new timing belt, always rotate the engine over a couple a times by hand before trying to start it. Always turned it by hand and made sure it turned easily
Thanks again in advance

Default Just got quoted $500 to adjust my VVT

does that seem expensive, I thought so... he told me he had to rip the back of the engine apart, take out my starter motor so he can get to the crank to re-line the cams. he also told me he had to hook it up to a machine and it would take at least 8-10 hours to do if not more.

Default Cam alignment tool

The procedure does involve removing the starter to install a bracket to position the crankshaft. It is a lot of work.

You could buy a tool for $300 and do it yourself if it fits your engine.
