Default gear lever parts

Can anyone tell me what part # 39 "Cable" does? It comes into the Gear Lever Carrier from the front directly below the ash tray. It attaches to a plastic barrel shaped part in front of the gear shifter.

This is what I think is happening. The gear shifter will not moving out of park when the notch connection between the cable and the barrel shaped part is not fully pushed back against the gear shift when you squees the head of the gear shift. The override button and its wire is suppose to force the plastic barrel shaped part into the correct position. When all the other parts do not work correctly. I am wondering what the cables job is in the proper operation of the Gear Lever system. If anyone has the correct sequence of operation for all the parts in the Gear Lever Carrier I would appreciate a copy or direction to the information.

Thanks for any help. Don and my 98S90 will thank you also. She wants to go for a drive soon.

What are you looking at, where I can see what you mean by "#39 Cable?"
