Recommendation on extended warranty -- negotiable? worth it?
Hi all,
I'm the proud owner of a new V90 Cross Country, and now I'm trying to decide whether or not to spend $3287 to extend the 4/40 warranty to 8/80. I don't drive a whole lot -- maybe 8k miles a year -- so I wouldn't likely hit the mileage limit. But there is a good chance I'll keep the car more than 4 years.
I am wondering if 1) I can negotiate much on this warranty price, and 2) if I really need to spend the money.
Anyone know much about the reliability of the V90, and in general the value of the Volvo extended warranty?
Thanks

Are you talking about an actual extended warranty or a prepaid maintenance? The warranty should be 4 years or 50,000 miles. If its an extended warranty with good coverage and no deductible, it can pay for itself with one expensive repair. But if it is just prepaid maintenance up to the 80k service, its probably not that good of a deal.

Yes, extended warranties are negotiable and can be purchased at any time prior to the expiration of the automaker's basic warranty. I was able to $1300 off of the price of the warranty during my V90 purchase in August. There is a significant amount of debate as to whether the extended warranty is worthwhile, but it provides me some peace of mind and that is priceless.

I think that the technology in the V90 is so complex and new, and so potentially quickly out-dated, that people won't want to keep their V90s as long as the old Cross Country wagons of the past. I have a 2001 V70 XC wagon with 230k miles, original engine and transmission, but there's no supercharger or turbocharger and there is no computer screen and relatively little computer technology to go wrong like today's models. I think that the Sensus screen of today will look really outdated in 5-10 years. If one wants to keep their new V90 beyond original warranty (which may not be advisable, given that much new technology will be coming out in the next few years regarding hybrids, etc.), then getting an extended warranty is a must, because there is so much that can and will go wrong after 3, 4, 5, and 6 years compared to the older models with far less complexity.
