Default ABS/Brake Pad warning lights on.

I'm sure this is not the first problem of it's kind, but can anybody help.
I had my front and rear brake pads replaced recently. The handbrake cable was still loose when I took it out of the garage so it was returned. An hours later all seemed well. I was on the road for 1/2 an hour when my ABS/Brake pad wear indicators flickered on and then stayed on. I again returned to the garage and they did a physical check but could find no fault. Their diagnostic machine could not read a Volvo's codes especially a 1999 model. My nearest Volvo dealer is some 25 miles away. I can't walk home whilst they have the car!
Can anybody advise what may be the problem or how and what I can do myself. The car runs perfectly and stops as normal.
Any help greatly appreciated.
