Default T3 - B4154T4 - high consumption engine oil

Since November 2022 I'm the owner of a V40 Cross Country OceanRace T3 Geartronic 2016 with the engine code B4154T4, with about 132000KM on board. When I bought the car I changed the engine oil (original Volvo oil), filter, distribution etc and since them I made about 2000KM with the car. Last week a notification appeared that the engine oil is low and I need to addd 1L of engine oil. Since December, when the revision was done, I checked the engine oil every month and it was ok but last week I received the message. I took the car back to the service where I did the revision, they checked it and found no leaks or anything related and their conclusion was that the car consumes oil, based on their measure about 1l/1000KM. The colleagues with this engine code, did you stumble across this issues? What was the root cause and have you managed to fix it?

Thank you for the help!

I'd keep an eye on the oil level - if you are consuming 1L / 1000 kms with no signs of leaks, the likely cause is pistons/rings. Several other models have experienced this issue so you can probably google around for known issues specific to your year/model. Have you spoken with a dealer to see if there's any service bulletins etc?

My thoughts where also on the pistons rings since I've done a good deal of reading about the issue and the replacement on some Volvo engines till 2015. Will go to a dealership and ask if they can diagnose the issue but they are not very reliable where I live. Thank you nevertheless.

Hi, I have exactly the same model, and mine has 84.000km.. currently I need to refill 0,5 l / ~4000km, but maybe later I can expect the same consumption as you?

Do have any news regarding your situation?

I dont see on mine any leak, little bit maybe around the turbo, its visible from below but its rather "oil-vapour" than leak. I don't know also a bit thicker oil can help or not? Like a 5w-20 maybe?

I went to the service which did the oil change, they added 2L of oil and since then I did another 1500 km. Didn't receive yet any message and I've been keeping an eye out on the oil level weekly but no changes (crossing fingers).
I will take the car in June to another more specialized Volvo shop because I have a "Turbo Underpowered" in VIDA DICE (borrowed from a friend) and maybe there is where the oil "went" but I cannot tell for sure. Still investigating the issue and will post here any updates which I might have.
Regarding changing the oil, I've read on multiple forums that, depending on the situation it might help BUT it's not recommended on the long term (it's a matter of personal decision in each case). I'm currently sticking with the Volvo 0W20 oil.

Alright, thank you very much the update, I hope the problem is not big and will be a solution soon. I will stick to the 0w20 oil too, I heard short term might can help a bit thicker oil but long term it will cause more trouble.

It sounds like you're keeping a close eye on your oil level and taking the necessary steps to investigate any potential issues. It's always a good idea to stay proactive when it comes to car maintenance. As for changing the oil, it's important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations and use the recommended oil type for your Volvo. If you have any concerns or questions, it's best to consult with a specialized Volvo shop in June to get a professional opinion. They'll be able to provide you with the most accurate advice based on your specific situation. Good luck with your investigation and keep us posted on any updates!

I have run into the same problem, only I have a 2012 S60. Mine uses a lot of oil, and I believe it is the piston rings, since I have no visible leaks anywhere.
It seems that Volvo has issues with high oil consumption. I have never owned one until now. I like the car but not the engine.

you can google for the Volvo service bulletins and find that this problem is specific to select engines centered on the 2012 S60 platform. Its unfortunate that you'll either need to check/fill oil regularly or pay $$$ that approaches the value of the car to have the updated piston/rings installed.
