Reverse light on my V40 is intermittent. Some times it comes on, most times not. Its a manual, any ideas to solve this problem?

I'm not familiar with the manual trans, but it should have a reverse light switch, I would check that.

 

To get to the reverse lamp switch disconnect and remove the battery, making sure you have a radio code if one is needed.
Remove the air cleaner housing, exposing the gearbox mounting.
Apply a jack lightly under the gearbox.
Slacken the nut for the gearbox mounting and remove three bolts from the mounting. Fold it up and tighten the nut.
You can now see the reverse lamp switch. Check the connectors and check for 12v. If 12v is present suspect a faulty switch.
Clean around the switch and remove it.
If the switch is replaced tighten it to 25nm.
The three bolts in the engine mounting are tightened to 50nm.
Replace the locknut on the gearbox mounting and tighten it to 98nm.
Replace the air cleaner housing and battery.
