'00 V70 GLT - Surging Turbo (not ETM)
Hi all. New member...faithful GLT owner. Just passed 200k and running well but recently having issues with the turbo surging on acceleration. Under hard acceleration or any normal time the turbo should spin up, it either offers full boost and then drops off or almost sputters...attempts to spin up repeatedly but won't.
ETM was replaced at 125k and having gone through that experience, this issue is not with throttle response. If you drive the car like it's NA, throttle response is fine. It's when you get into it and expect the turbo to be there, the issue crops up.
Air filter and airbox in general is clean. I removed the MAF and cleaned with appropriate spray without any improvement. Don't have a VAG-COM on hand but considering getting one if it will save money in the long run. Any thoughts or next steps to try would be appreciated.
I did attempt to use the search tool but neither the quick nor advanced search seemed to offer anything. Thanks.

Weak Responce
Hello, The symptoms you describe match those in my Mom's Saab. She lived with it for a while. It was no big deal for her. Then she reported the noise created by the bypass valve dumping pressure out of the intake system. It was fixed by changing the bypass valve, aka "Hooter Valve". Good solid boost. My V70 isn't turbo-charged so I can only say check for a hooter valve or faulty wastegate or some such thing. Kira

I would remove the intake plastic piece running into the front of the turbo. Stick your fingers in there (engine off please, this is crucial unless you like your finger tips chopped off) and spin the compressor wheel. If it does not spin freely, does not spin at all, or feels gritty while spinning it, the turbo needs to be rebuilt. Also check for play in the compressor. If you can move it side to side or up and down the turbo needs rebuilding because your seals/bearings are bad. If any of these items are there this is great time for a turbo upgrade in my opinion!!
If this stuff above feels ok I would look for a bad intercooler/turbo hose, vacuum hose that is bad, or your bypass valve could be bad.
