Default Alternator variations & interchange

I'm picking up a 1998 V70xc that needs an alternator. I did an interchange search in Hollander, and it tells me that the 100 amp alternator in the '98 xc will only interchange with a '98 or '99 AWD V70. If it were FWD, also 100 amp, I could use an alternator from '93-'99. I may be off a little on those years since I didn't write it down, but you get the idea.

Anybody know whats different about the alternator used on the AWD cars? Can a FWD alternator be adapted? My local wrecking yards have plenty of FWD Volvos, and 960s too for that matter, which I would think would be the same as well but obviously aren't. They have very few AWD cars though, so my options are limited.

Any thoughts appreciated.

The 850's and 98 only s/v/c 70 alt should work fine. The 99 is different.
