V70 is just a wagon, FWD and the "V70R" is awd. The Cross Country is only awd.
Some other differences. The V70 comes in V70 base model, V70 glt, V70 T5 and V70R. While the Cross Country is just a cross country model.
Depends on what year V70 or Cross Country you get. 99+ have the ETM issues, should be taken care of free by Volvo to have the ETM replaced and the new software loaded.
What model V70's are you looking at and what years?
TECH if I left anything out please help out.
If your living in the city no need for an AWD really like the Cross Country. V70R would be good though.
If you live out in the boonies then you might want to look into the cross country.

I have 98 V70 GLT which has the low pressure turbo. I have not had any problems with it and it's been driven daily driver for the past two years. I see no need for AWD living 30 miles outside of Columbus, OH. If the snow is so bad I need AWD I'm staying home until the roads are cleared. I have not stayed home once in the past three years. Before that I had a 4WD Suburban and went out looking for snow. I really think FWD is all you really need to get around in snow. AWD is just something more to have problems with.
I can't speak for the newer Volvo's 2001- but I own a 98 V70 and it's been a very reliable car. Bought it at 110k miles, now 135k. I've changed spark plugs, dist cap/rotor, serp belt, fuel filter, water pump, timing belt with coolant flush. Throttle swith was faulty - got that fixed. Brake pads/rotors. A wheel bearing was replaced. One new motor mount. You might run into an A/C issue. Thank goodness for forums like this. I had the timing belt was changed early before the recommended milage for my own peace of mind also.
If you keep up with basic maintenace it should run a loooong time. Volvo's are really solid cars/tanks. I like the "thump" the doors make when I shut them. I like how they drive down the road, smooth steady. It definitely feels more solid than my 3rd car 95 integra. Again, this is my experience from a 1998 V70 non-turbo.
