Smile Volvo v70 a/c problem.

Hi. I own a 2001 Volvo V70 T5. I started noticing problems with my A/C lately everytime I turn it on. I was checking out the car in my driveway, turned the A/C on, the compressor clutch starts to turn, and after about 15 - 20 minutes of running fine the clutch turns off and does not come back on, the air inside the car goes from ice cold to warm and air still comes out of all the vents but no A/C. I first noticed this driving on the highway, then I turn off the A/C for about 15 - 20 minutes and turn it back on and it's ice cold again but after 15 - 20 minutes again the clutch stops and the air goes back to warm. P.S. everytime I turn on the heat in the winter A syrupy smell fills the inside of the car, any help with that as well?

My "new" 2000 V70 does the same thing. any ideals from anyone?

Will be going on a 300 mile road trip in 3 weeks and want my A/C working 100%.
Going to take the V70 to local brake-A/C shop next week, but would like some feedback from you pros here so I don't get played for repairs I really don't need and possible bill padding.

thanks

By the way, I was wondering. Does the 2001 V70s have an overheat sensor for the A/C compressor? If it does, where is it? and can it be bypassed? I'm guessing if it has an overheat sensor, that probably cuts the compressor off once it gets hot.

Hey Tech, thanks for replying. What do you mean by reshimmed? What does reshimming do for the clutch? and How can I reshim it?

This is pretty much what you have to do.

Does not matter if your car is turbo or Non. The best way to do it on the car without taking the freon out is to remove the cooling fan. Then remove the drive belt and compressor(4 screws) Then fold the compressor so the center screw on the front is straight up. I take a piece of cardboard and put it up against the radiator so the compressor will not mark it up. Then take the center section out. Some people will screw 3 screws into the holes and press it out. I have a puller I use to pull the center section out.

Next week I'm having my V70 A/C system evac and recharge to specs to see if that does anything for me. Re-shimming is way over my diy head, so unless my volvo guy is willing to do it I'm SOL. Most likely he would just want to replace the whole compressor with clutch.

Hey Tech, I decided to go ahead and change my A/C compressor because I got a better one for free. My question is, after swapping my compressor, can I refill the refrigerant myself or should I have it professionally vacuumed/pumped? If I can do it at home, do you know about how many cans of freon and oil this car should take?
Any help would be apreciated, Thanks.

I would have a shop do it. You need to have it vacuumed really good then charged to the proper level.
