Nightmare on xc60 street
I have a 2016 xc60. I bought it 7 years ago in the uk and registered it in france. For the first 6 it was faultless. I live in france but we go to spain twice a year. On the way back about 18 months ago i had an abs/esc failure. This disabled the usual cruise and abs. The car got us home and the next day the fault was gone after driving 100 meters. This im told is quite commen. Off to my mechanic to check. Front drivers side. He ordered the part but didnt fit it as the on the date of fitting he couldent remember the side and it didnt show in the obd2 history, so maybe he wiped it.
Roll on next spain trip. Same thingABS failure, which disappears next day. Then on the way back from spain proper failure that didnt go away next day.
so now with a launch obd reader U012100 pbm general failure and B11D453 lost communication with pbm. So this is parking brake module.
I agree to put the car in to the garage and on the way home the abs failure changes to city safe service required. This has some implications. 1 the Abs and esc and cruise now work. All weve got is a service message. So back to the garage to put the car theough a french mot which was due to run out the following month. This is strategic as if this turns into a nightmare i can still legally drive the car. In france the abs message is a fail but a service message is not. The car passed but then afterwards the next test showed turbo underboost P029900 plus tge following. C003407 front wheel sensor fail, P163568 axle out of range algorithm based failure. B11D453 low speed collision and U041568 algorithm based failure closing velocity module,
Great. So now the symptoms were as before abs fail but with the engine knackered just to rub things in.
Ive checked for pixie and dixie chomping my wiring loom with a borascope. No pixie and dixie. The car is now going to a auto electrician to check the wiring, sensors, modules and the CAN bus system which will be done with an oscilloscope. It then to volvo france to be analysed .
The problem in france is that the volvo dealers are franchises so they can change your oil but they dont use vida dice believe it or not. As they are too tight to pay the 50 grand annually to rent the system from volvo. As they are also jauar landrover, jeep and about five other franchises in one. So they will probably use a launch obd reader and then want to start changing expensive bits. So they have instructions to give me an estimate and we will go from there. The turbo seems ok as it the car still flys but it could be a dirty sensor or a leak or a crack. Who knows. The milage of the car 35000 miles. Engine is a D5 220hp. Supposed to be bullit proof according to most car dealers. What will happen then is the car is coming over to the uk as volvo specialists here will pay the £40000 vida system rental costs and they will inspect and find the faults. We hope.
So thats why its going to an auto electrician next week to check , wiring, CAN bus communication and module integrity before volvo france.
I will keep you posted, no pun intended. A few valium may help but this is turning into an epic story you may want to tell the grand kids or not.

I suspect the ABS fail is related to the front wheel speed sensor fault. Did that sensor get tested and replaced? Also, not sure if it happens on newer cars but on older Volvos, the wheel sensor can get bothered by dirt or grease on the back side of the wheel where the sensor monitors the rotation (example when a CV boot fails, some of the grease can get on the back of the wheel). you can try cleaning that area (brake cleaner?) and inspect the CV boot/axle to see if that helps When there are a list of faults, you can write them down and then clear to see what resets within the next 300 miles/500km or so and scan again. I'd also check the system voltage as a low voltage event (such as driving through heavy rain etc) or something that caused a blown fuse may have set off some false positive codes. Note there are some pretty good full featured OBD2 scanners that can interpret the Volvo proprietary codes - you can always ask the service manager what tool they use. I doubt a dealer would have a $200 scanner as their main tool - some of the pro gear goes for $1000+ and can see all the code sets, do ECU programming etc.
