Default Dying battery indicator??

I may (notice I said may) have stumbled on a possible warning that your battery is about to die.THe battery in our 01 XC70 completely died overnight last night. When we bought the car we were told it had been replaced about 2 years ago with a factory replacement, but it turns out the orginal battery was still in it.

Anyway, the car started and ran fine up until the battery died, but I noticed the last two days when I went to start it, the gas gauge needle would peg at empty while it was cranking then spring back to a normal reading once the car started.

SInce the XC is my wife's car I do not drive it that often, but i really don't remember the gauge needle acting that way before. I wonder if it may be a sign of impending battery failure? Anyway , just my rambling idea.
