Default Replacing Alternator in '99

Could someone provide the step by step to replace the altenrator on my '99 XC-70? Do I just remove serpentine belt, remove PS pump, and then altenrator? Not a lot fo room on that side of the engine so I don't want to do something I don't need to.

I also noticed the hose to the PS pump is seeping a bit so there is fluid on the alt. Could this leak be causing my alternator problem?

Thanks in advance

Al T.

Yes remove the belt and PS pump then the alternator and you should be fine.

Default having trouble with bottom alternator bolt

I'm trying to follow the instructions for replacing the alternator on my 1996 855. (http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index...r-replacement/)

The problem comes with step seven, which reads:

7) Undo the long alternator bolt in the bottom of the alternator towards to the engine side. I used a 1/2" ratchet to undo it. You have plenty room down there for using any "big" ratchet.

The problem is that for two days I've tried everything I can think of to remove the bottom alternator bolt, but am at wit's end.

Can anyone give me any suggestions? I'm in serious trouble here.

Thanks.

Will it just not come loose or you cannot get to it?

It won't come loose, partly because I can't get at it very well. I can get my socket on it, but can't get any meaningful leverage on it.

You have to keep trying a combo of sockets and extensions to get it loose. I usually use a short socket and stubby extension.

I'm having the same problem, except I can't even get to it. Tech, can you shed a bit more light on how you do it?

Thanks

Yeah, I just realized that they changed the design completely from 98 to 99, but yes, if you can shed some light on how to get to the last alternator bolt on the bottom (engine side) for a 98, that would be awesome. I got the other two bolts out already, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get to the one on the engine side.

Thanks!

You are talking about the lower one correct?
The head of the bolt is just on top of the compressor going from the back of the motor foward. I use a short wobble extension and a short 13 socket. I think it is 13 but it may be a 12.

tech,

you seem to have this down pretty good so i might as well ask you...

the big bracket that the power steering pump bolts to. does it need to come out or can is stay? im having trouble getting the alt out since its hitting the black box under the intake. and is prefer not to pull the intake.

this is on a 2000 s70GLT

No need to remove the entire bracket. It takes a little work but it will come out.
