Default Tranny issues

I have a 98 V70 AWD with what I think is a transmission problem. Occasionaly driving up a grade the car will act like it had a complete misfire, this occurs at point when the trans should downshift to a lower gear for climbing the hill, it has only happened 3x and only when I'm not trying to accelerate up the grade ie light pressure on the throttle. Any ideas?

I checked it when it was cold and not running and the level was ok , fluid clear w/ no burnt smell.

I have a 2002 V70 XC and it seems as though I may be at the brink of a transmission problem. It doesn't acc like it used to, it seems to have trouble shifting, and seems louder than usual when attempting to shift. I'd like to check the fluid myself, but can't locate the stick...can you send me the direction of this thing so I can tell if there is color distortion or a burnt smell??

It is really hard to find. But it is in the front of the transmission about half way down. The dipstick is yellow. It is hidden like under the lower radiator hose.
