Instrument Cluster Communication & SRS Airbag issue
I have an "SRS Airbag Service Urgent" warning light on my 2004 XC90 dashboard. When i got a computer diagnostic done, it read the following error codes below (picture attached) -
00D5 - Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Lamp
00E4 - Control Module
E001 - Control Module Communication
E003 - Control Module.
My dealer said the Instrument Cluster Communication problem and quoted $1650 to replace it ($250 labor, rest parts).
1) Is this truly an airbag malfunction (hence dangerous and should be fixed ASAP) or is the instrument cluster in the dashboard giving spurious signals? If latter I can push out or skip the repair.
2) Is there a cheaper way to fix this?
thanks,
Kiran

Kiran, I am newer to Volvos, and very far from an expert, but I can share this with you.
I had some issues with my wife's instrument cluster, and I was not about to spend that kind of money.
I removed it, and sent it into a place that offers a rebuild service on ebay. It was like $300. Removing it was one of the easiest things I have ever done on a car. Instructions are on youtube and it literally takes like 5 minutes, being careful.
I got the cluster back in just a few days. I intalled it in that same 5 minute manner. The instructions said that the SRS light would be on and you have to have it cleared.
I went to a friend who has an independent shop with a Snap On OBD reader.
He cleared the code in seconds, and my cluster is like new.
Now, I am not commenting at all on whether or not you have legitimate SRS issues. I have no idea, but if it is your cluster $1650 sounds like madness.
If you like, I can find the name of the rebuilder I used. I was very happy with them.
They shipped my cluster out the same day they received it, and it works like new.
Hope this helps,
