Default starting problem

Parked 2004 xc 90 yesterday to run to work. When I came out motor turned over but would not crank. Fuel or spark? So I came back later and checked fuel pump fuses etc... Same condition,
I the sprayed a little starter fluid down intake and it cranked right up. My question is this a sign of a fuel pump going out? Fuel filter? Its obvious a fuel problem but really want to fix problem before it happens again.
Thanks

Turning over and cranking are the same thing. I assume you mean it would crank but not start. You would need a fuel pressure gauge to check for pressure when it happens but obviously you won't find a problem if it is currently starting.

Yeap start not crank. Started this morning, ran fine but after I got to work I re started 3 times. It cranked right up but on the 4th restart same problem. A little starter fluid started up. Thinking fuel pump. Do these slowly go out or just die at once?

Fuel pumps can develop a dead spot due to wear and tear. If one behaves like this, toss it out and replace.

The other thing to be sure of is that the crank sensor is fully plugged in.

Trying to eliminate. If crank sensor is the problem would it start at all? Just went outside same problem, a little starter fluid and I am now driving the volvo to the house to park. I am ordering a new fuel pump today. Also I feel sure it has the original fuel filter which will be replaced immediately.

Normally no, a crank sensor means it won't run. However, I did have a 2004 S60 that was running, albeit badly, with the crank sensor unplugged.

Even with a bad fuel pump spraying starting fluid would make it fire but not continue to run.

I'd go with fuel pump for starters.

Put pressure gauge on rail it reads a steady 56-57lbs while running.. every once in a while it will twitch but not more than a pound. When I turn car off it drops down to around 52lbs. After sitting 30 min not running gauge reads 42 lbs. Should it bleed down at all? Pressure seems good now Im wondering if its something else.

Sounds like good fuel pressure to me.

After replacing the crank sensor to no avail I went back to the battery. I had it tested initially and it read good. i had it re tested and read ok but after checking voltage it was low. Car would turn over but seemed a little weak. New battery and boom everything started up like normal. I'm not sure what voltage is needed to fire everything up but obviously I didn't have enough.
