Default V8 AWD Road Noise

I have a '06 XC90 V8 AWD with approx 52k miles. Over the past 6 months, I've noticed a humming sound that gets louder the faster I drive. I believe it's the tranny or transfer case, but that's my dime store opinion.

I've had no warning lights or error messages from the OBC. That said, I've seen quite a few threads on here about faulty trannys and bearings. Those problems all appear to be older model T6's, so I don't know what to think.

The dealership isn't helping - they're calling it normal wear and tear.

So a few questions:

1) Has anyone else experienced this problem with a V8?
2) How much was the repair?
3) Should I re-up for my now-expired warranty?
3a) Can you recommend an aftermarket warranty vendor - Volvo wants $6400 for a 48mo/100k mi ($250 deductible) for an Easy Care warranty

Thank you.
DH

Sorry for the ambiguity. It's not road noise, it's a mechanical sound. I just want to make sure it's not my tranny or transfer case dying a slow death. From reading this forum, it appears there's a history of tranny issues (albeit with the T-6, not the V8).

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have only heard of a final drive (rear end) noise on coast down.
