Vibration of steering wheel and car
Just had oil change/tires rotated at tire store. Tires are relatively new, bought in pairs in October, then December 2009. After the service the vehicle has low rumble vibration at 20 mph, then later loud, shaking at 50-60 mph. Tires were rebalanced twice and this did not solve problem.
Now at third visit with tire shop, they say that my rack and pinion is broken/cracked and this was cause of issue. Mind you, the vehicle was perfect prior the service two weeks ago. They say I need it replaced at the dealer and rack is just sitting on motor mounts.
Does it make any sense? Is the rack and pinion supposed to just wear out at 80K miles, or could the tire shop have broken it while on the hydraulic lift? What are safety implications if I continue to drive it broken?
Appreciate help. The Volvo dealer is over an hour away from my house and would rather not take it there. Just need to have an idea of what repair is involved, so that I can look at local repair shops. Thanks.
