Where to Buy Extended Warranty for XC90?
I'm generally of the mind that extended warranties for electronics and whatnot are usually unnecessary, however as I continue to consider buying a pre-owned XC90, I think an extended warranty is something that I'd definitely want to have. That said, I was curious if anyone might be able to suggest some reputable sources (including third party options) for purchasing extended warranties on the XC90.
If I end up going the XC90 route, I'll likely end up purchasing it from a non-Volvo dealer. As I'd probably end up purchasing an '05 or '06 with relatively low miles, I'm guessing that portions of the original manufacturer's warranty might still be in effect. Would a vaild manufacturer's warranty vs. an expired manufacturer's warranty have any effect on what would be the best option for purchasing an extended warranty, or does this not matter too much? Also, would purchasing an extended warranty directy from Volvo be an option?
Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to help!

Check with the dealer that you buy the XC90 from. Odds are they have a relationship with a third party warranty company or can recommend one.
Clearly a unit that still has some manufacturer's warranty left on it will give you better protection than one that's out of warranty. You can check with your nearest Volvo dealer, but not sure how they would view warranting a vehicle that was sold by a third party reseller that they haven't gone through and checked out.
Get into the fine print of what is and is not covered in any 3rd party extended warranty plan. For instance, the 2.5T and T6 have a maintenance item to replace the timing belt at around 70K miles or so. Will the warranty cover it? It's a good $700 just for that timing belt, and more if you decide to replace the water pump while they have it apart. (Side note the V-8 is the Yamaha motor that originally was in the Taurus SHO, and does not have a timing belt, it's chain drive and not requiring the timing belt interval change as above.)
Also dig into the circumstances of how and when they cover things like a transmission repair. If you read through these XC90 threads you'll find examples where others have had the warranty but the claim was "denied". Similarly, a relative of mine had to pay $4,500 for a new transmission even though he had the extended warranty. Explanation? The type of failure was not part of the warranty package.
As JimKW stated to you in yourother thread, if the warranty company was not making money on these things they wouldn't be in business. They are there to make money, not to cover your vehicle for any failures.
Good luck on whatever decision you end upmaking, and let us know how it works out for you.

Ranging from issues that I've seen from XC90 I would recommend to get a vehicle that have existing warranty and extended with Volvo VIP extended warranty (longest available) recommend to price out at dealer first... I notice in Rental alone I will get a lot of my money back.. Not to mention the electrical issues with 05 and o6 up XC90..... If u get a T-6 just so happened 1 transmission claim alone will get your money back... or 1 radio display claimed will get 1/3 of your money back for the extended warranty.
Thanks for the information. If I were to purchase a pre-owned XC90 with the original warranty still in effect from a non-Volvo manufacturer, could I still go to a Volvo dealer and purchase a VIP extended warranty? Also, how much do the VIP warranties typically cost, and how long are they in effect?
U will have to pay for an used car inspection and whatever it's needed get fixed under the factory warranty and wear and tear items (customer pays) then it will qualify for VIP extended warranty. Yes u can purchase from Volvo dealer. It's pricey but in long run will worth it... the prices based on deductible, length of warranty and rate scale of your vehicle. hope that helps.
Hi just purchased a 2007 XC90 with 61KMS on the original volvo warranty 80K. I am thinking for buying an extended warranty. I bought mine from a non-volvo dealer and he's quoting $2900 CAN (from Volvo) and $2000 CAN (non-volvo warranty). Both of which are bumper to bumper.
Any of you have experienced with the extended warranty and price. Specifically here in Canada?
thanks in advance.

IMO they are a waist... If you don’t think an XC90 is a reliable car then I would not buy it at all. If the car is under 150K I doubt you will even use it. I would save the money you are going to use to pay for the warranty for any repairs…. If you don’t need any then keep the money.
