Hi, I have a 2006 xc90 v8. The outer shell covering on the middle muffler has partially rusted and broken off on one side so I pulled it off from the muffler itself. The muffler is fine, very solid and no leaks. The rest of the exhaust system is in very good condition, but on acceleration it sounds like it has glass pack mufflers on it. Is that due to the outer shell covering coming off and should this be an issue for inspection,,, I'm in Pa.

 

If the muffler sounds like a glass pack then its not in good condition and may be rusting from the inside out or have some holes you can't see. As to issues with inspection, they will be looking for exhaust leaks not sound level. Can you feel or hear any exhaust leaking out from the pipes or center muffler? Pay attention around any flex pipes as they tend to open up as well.

 

I put the car up on ramps and inspected it while it was running from the engine back to the tail pipe. I couldnt hear or feel any leaks at all.
