Unhappy Engine System Service Required - 042 and 058

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere.

My 2004 Volvo V70 2.4L 5C (non-turbo, engine B5244S) has several times beeped and pops up the message "Engine System Service Required".
I can get to the actual messages by hitting the trip reset and pushing down on the button on the end of the indicator. It says:

2 Messages - with 042 and 058 displayed when I toggle through them.

From what I understand these are not OBD-II codes, but specific volvo diagnostic codes. I was sent on a wild goose chase, previously interpreting 058 as O2 related and I replaced both O2 sensors. The error messages persists, although 042 has gone away, but 058 has stayed on.

I have a Harbor Freight OBD-II reader (not the cheapest one - the roughly $70 one) and no stored or pending error codes are thrown when I connect it up. I've checked about 5 times.

Does anyone has a list of what these codes might be, or any recommendations for how to go about getting them diagnosed?

I'm probably going to take it to the dealership sometime soon and have them diagnose it, if they can - I don't mind paying for an hour of service, if they can do it for that.

Until then, I thought I would check with you kind folks. Thank you, if you have any leads for me.

All the best.

your car has two O2 sensors - the front sensor (Before the cat) is used to manage fuel trim, the rear is uses to measure cat efficiency. too much difference means the cat is not heating and using the O2 to burn off any remaining HCs. With that said, its been my experience that vacuum leaks and intake air leaks can trigger O2 sensor faults. I believe the 058 relates to the rear O2 sensor which is mostly an emissions check issue. I'm surprised you are not seeing any stored codes. Did you view the codes by plugging the sensor in then turn on the key to position 2 to enable the computer? Also check if your model can read real time data while the car is running. The other possibility is you are seeing a chassis code for something like a blown rear brake light (which the OBD-II reader wouldn't grab).

I've never researched the meaning of the codes displayed in the window. You are much better off to use an OBD II reader and at least read the codes that are in the system.

Those are not fault codes. I wish whoever made up that they were hadn't.

Go to the dealer for the free diagnosis.

Tony1963 and ES6T: Thank you both for the good pointers. I will get in touch with the dealer and report back.

I also did some cross-checking on this very site.

https://volvoforums.com/forum/volvo-...-ecm-cem-5210/ - mentions the very same codes that I have and concludes that those errors mean nothing.

To quote:
Those are error messages for trying to clear the SERVICE LIGHT.
Those codes mean nothing.

Bottom line is, I'll still go the Volvo Dealer, but only when its next convenient.

Those are not error codes at all.

They are the numeric equivalent to a corresponding text message, such as Hood Open, Driver Door Open, etc.

No, Those are not fault codes. You cannot get fault codes without a scanner or code reader.
