Default trying to find best extended warranty

I just bought a 2001 S80 T-6 with 62000 miles on it (my first Volvo). It runs good but is obviously outside of warranty. The dealer I bought it from offered a 30mo/30K warranty to cover everything for $4200. I thought this was a little high but didn't do enough research on it before I went in. I also knew that Volvo maintenance is high. When the dealer showed me that I could cancel the policy within 60 days and get 100% refund, I bought it figuring when I got home, I'd do the research and cancel if I needed. I got home and started researching warranties and found that a lot of them were in the $2000-$3000 range. I'm pretty set on cancelling the current policy and getting another cheaper one, but I want to make sure I'm covered adequately.

Can anyone recommend a good extended warranty?

I am personally against any sort of extended warranty, as they are there to make money for those who are selling it. The primary reasons as to why I'm against it:

- They often come up with 100 versions of excuses for not paying.
- You can set the money aside for scheduled maintenance items.

However, some seem to have been lucky to have their warranty coverage paid, but the third party's services seem to have the worst reputation; the package from new car dealers seem to be a safe alternative.

Wait for others' replies to get better perspective.....

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

I am with JPN on this one...If you do some web research (google extended warranty for example) you'll find any number of sites that talk about the merits of extended warranties.

Unfortunately, except in some specific cases, the consensus seems to be that they are not worth the money. Consumer Reports has an article on line that actually identifies warranty costs, what is and isn’t covered, and what the true value is to the consumer. Their conclusion was that extended warranties on vehicles are not worth it; they recommend the consumer save the money they would put toward the warranty and use that for any major repairs that may crop up down the road.

That said, the best value (not in terms of dollars but in what is covered) typically will be the dealer’s extended warranty program.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide to do.

It's quite simple. If the extended warranty did not make money for the one selling it, they would not sell it.
