Default 1990 240 5-speed transmission questions

Hi everyone. Traded my 740 and now I got a manual 240 that I’ve got a few questions for.

background -
326xxxmiles NA. I am told it still has the original tranny fluid in it. Makes vacuum esc whining 1st 2nd and 3rd gear rising in pitch when accelerating. No problem shifting into 1st at a stop or in motion but it does take a certain maneuver to get into 2nd (down and to the right) and into 4th (down and a bit to the left but not as bad as 2nd). The previous owner said it needs new engine mounts and that’s what he thinks is the cause of the shifting maneuver. I’m just trying to enjoy the car for as long as it will allow me to but I don’t think I’ll be spending the 3000 or so to get a new transmission in/rebuilt.

questions-
1. I know this is a controversial question but should I change the transmission fluid? Any recommendations?
2. Is it the engine mounts causing the difficulty shifting into 1st and 4th? I’m assuming not.
3. Any other trips / recommendations?

thanks in advance for all who give their input.

Default 5 speed m/t M47

Your 5 speed m/t is an M47. It uses a little over 3 liters of ATF Type F which is what the factory specifies. There are 2 engine mounts, left and right and they are pretty much standard for all 240s plus 1 transmission support. There are 3 types of transmission support so you need a sample to determine which is the correct one or you can check visually. There is a round type, a square block or a rectangular block. They are not expensive so you could actually order all 3 types and just return the other 2 later.

There are some transmission linkage bushings that you could replace which will make your shifting much more precise.

Hope this helps.

M47 takes 3.3 PINTS of fluid...
With 326k miles it's a good bet the tranny is well worn and doubtful any minor maintenance will fix it.
Still, changing the fluid shouldn't hurt, and a new clutch may help getting it into gear easier.
