88 245 GL Drive-line issue
Hey everyone, yesterday on the highway I heard a bit of a tick and afterwards the car was vibrating pretty heavily when I would come to a stop.
(I have the aw70 automatic)
I immediately pulled over and checked under the car. I was under the impression was the center support bearing and it's housing because the bolt seemed to have gone missing. The spring and housing were still in place but I could move the shaft around with my hand fairly easy.
This was all well and good and I had planned to order the part from IPD until on my way home from work the thing started to slow down drastically and began to overheat.
I'm at a loss for what happened, the transmission fluid is full, the right color, and doesn't smell and the filter and mount were changed not too long ago.
What does this sound like?! Any insight would be appreciated
thanks!

Hm, I don't know how the center bearing fault can cause overheating... Unless things got so screwed up under there that the added resistance is causing extra drag, etc. Otherwise, the two are not related and it is a coincidence...
We had a rear u-joint bind up on my daughter's 240 that would cause severe vibration upon braking. It would also vibrate less so upon acceleration and when cruising there was no vibration at all. She thought it was a problem with her brakes. I would drop the drive shaft and check the u-joints for binding. Just make sure that you mark the front and rear shafts so that they are properly aligned when you re-install.
And I agree with Lev - most likely the vibration is unrelated to the overheating.
