88 740 Turbo, problems...
Hi, I'm new here, just trying to get an idea of how to take care of my baby....
I have a 1988 740 Turbo, with only 128,000ish miles on it, and it has been acting up lately. I recently acquired the car, and have been loving it ever since, but now the turbo seems to be misbehaving. The car starts rough, but after it warms up runs fairly smooth. During normal driving there is a high pitch whine that has been growing louder and louder coming from the general turbo direction. Also, when the gauge shows that the turbo should be producing boost, the car seems more sluggish instead of more powerful. In general, the last 500-1000 miles have seen the car getting slower and slower. It is difficult to maintain 65 mph on the highway, and it used to just fly!
I just took it in to the shop to have it looked at, and they said that it is a turbo problem and that they don't work on turbos. Another place I called said that it would probably need a new or remanufactured turbo, and I don't really have a ton of money to spend right now. Any help would be really appreciated. The car still runs, but seems to be declining. Sorry that my first post is so long, I just want to save this car, and hopefully save some money too.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I had the same thing and it was the hoses, as tech suggested. Mine were all shot, but the driver side intercooler hose was the culprit. If you need to get them let me know. I found a source that was great and reasonable.

Reg,
Don't try to scrimp on Turbo hoses. They are under a lot of pressure...literally!
While they may LOOK like dryer hose, believe me, they have to be much more stout. As a result they can be pricey.

Well, I checked all of the hoses, and there is one with a hole in it. It might be the airflow meter-to-turbo hose. Some of the other hoses nearby are soft, but I haven't had a chance to check for collapsing. Would Autozone or a similar store have this part in stock, or should I look online. Whoever said that they had a good source for hoses, I would love some info. Thanks!
Im not sure if Auto Zone carries them or not.You could look online or check for a specialized import parts store that carries Volvo parts and they might have them.
Call this number and ask for Tony. The site is Volvosite, a division of ProTech Parts. 1.803.324.8554. Tell Tony John Costas sent you.
For the piece you described above (the hose going to the MAF) I purchased it for $90 shipped. It was an aftermarket. For all other intercooler hoses you need to get from Volvo, which he did for me at 20% off list. His prices have been the best by far, and I checked for weeks. By the way, I replaced the hose you described, it was weak and had a hole. I was certain this was the problem, but it wasnt. I believe it is the driver side hose directly connected to the intercooler, but I am going to replace them all. Why wait for another to go....
