89' to 91' Transmission swap
Hi everybody, I have a 91' 740 w/Regina efi, tranny seems to shift at high RPM's, changed filter like 5 months ago, the fluid was fine in it red not brown, well I thought that would change it, nothing, a couple of months ago I was lookin up relays that had to do with this, well, I winded up eliminating the OD relay by jumpering it so it shifted to 4th cuz it wasnt,(drove this without hittin 4th for a good 5 months), but it still shifts at high RPM's, so now I bought this 89' 740 w/Bosch efi, it only has 127,000 on it and I want to know if I could swap trannys with no problem...

they are both AW70's ? afaik, it should bolt in.
my parts catalog says an 89 740 LH2.4 has ... 1208563 or 1208604, either of these can be exchanged for 5003687 (these are all AW70). this is mated to a 3502072 torque converter housing and a 30502496 torque converter
a 91 Regina has the 1208604, and again the dealer exchange part (I assume this is a rebuilt w/ core) is 5003687, this is mated to a 3502072 torque converter housing and a 30502496 torque converter
so, yeah, they should be directly interchangable.
but, you sure your kickdown isn't stuck or something? what do you mean, shifting at high RPMs, anyways?

I have to rev it like its a stick...it doesnt shift like a normal automatic tranny, the kick down cable seems to have slack in it at times but it snaps back when I pull it and let go, I adjusted that so it shifts a bit smoother but I still have to achieve the same RPM's to get it to shift, thats why I want to switch trannys, I just bought the 89' so I could swap sum parts of of it, get it runnin and sell it so I could buy this 88' 240 I want, the 89' came with a bunch of new stuff, 5 new tires, rack and pinion, struts, relays, exhaust, etc. stuff that I needed for my car, so my car (the 91') is new basically, the only thing I wasnt sure about was the tranny shifting problem...thanx for your input, if can let me know anything further about this problem it would be a big help, but I'm most definitly gonna switch trannys since the 89' only has 127,000 on it, my 91' has 250,000...big difference...

if it was a turbo, it would be an AW71, which AFAIK, is interchangable with an AW70, its just a heavier duty version, same ratios and everything. the turbo has a downshift retarder which I think works off manifold vacuum, but its external to the transmission and I believe just keeps the kick down cable from kicking down under high throttle
