axle nut correct install help
Can someone tell me how tight the axle nut should be.
I have some play and noise after changing front rotors a while back ( 8 months)
I may not have tightened the axle nut correctly.
Thanks in advance.

Did you repack the bearings? When not replacing the bearings, you put the castle nut back on finger tight.
If replacing the bearing you tighten the nut to 44 ft. lbs. while turning the hub to fully seat it in the hub. Then you loosen the nut half a turn and install the cotter pin.
The bearings are meant to last the life of the car, with new grease installed occasionally.

Seeing I am hearing some howl do you think I may just have not tightened the nut enough or what.
DO you recommend I change the Outer Bearing just in case ??
Thanks 4 your help !

I would inspect the grease and the races and see if it looks like they got really hot .... the metal will be blue if so. Only then would I replace them.
I pack the grease using the palm of my hand but some people will actually soak them in paint thinner over night to get the old grease out first.
