B6304S in 740 GLE wagon
I'm not quite sure where this belongs so It's going here . I may have the opportunity to get a free 24v inline 6 out of a 900 series. I would like to put it into my 745 which has the 2.4 8v in it. Problem Is I don't know enough myself to get it done. my question is what would I need to make it work? could I keep the trany that's in the 740 there? would I need to replace the entire harness or would I just need to swap computers? Would I need a new drive shaft made ect? any information helps. Also I would have access to the full car not just the engine so any electrics or what not I can get out of it.
Why I want to do this. The N/a 8v is just plane slow and sucks gas. the 24v has twice the power about and not any worse on gas.
thanks.

you'll need to swap EVERYTHING from that 960, all wiring harnesses under the hood, the ICU and ECU are completely different, the dashboard wiring is COMPLETELY different on a 960, so nothing will mate (the ECUs and fuse and relay panels are all under teh dash, but on a 960 they are so different you won't even recognize them). you'll need the 960's electronic controlled transmission.
a turbo upgrade would be a LOT simpler.
oh, btw, that whiteblock 960 I6 is a very expensive engine to maintain, it requires a lot more TLC and if it ever breaks its rather fragile timing belt, you're looking at an impossibly expensive valve job.

If I was going to do this (having never done one myself) I would budget a lot more than two weeks, and I would buy a beater and drive that while I did the swap over the Summer.
I would also instead look into parting out that free donor motor here or on Ebay, getting a 5.0L Ford Mustang motor/tranny and putting that in instead. Moar powa! ...And better mileage on the highway than either.
