Default Dam just lost the odometer

I've been through a lot over the last few months and am now driving our 89 740 with the goal of hitting 500k in the next several years. Well today the odometer stopped working at 377738 . The speedo works ok just the odometer. I assume there are some mechanical gears inside so I'll have to pull the cluster at some point and see if I can get the odometer rebuilt. Didn't do a web search yet but does anyone know of a company who rebuilds these old clusters. Everything else work . Since I replaced the ECU after finding it had problems the car runs like a top. Just letting off some steam.

The odometers have a plastic gear that can lose a tooth and stops working. IPD USA sells a replacement gear kit for $5 or so and there should be some Youtube vids or blog posts on how to remove and diassemble the cluster. I did this twice on 850s and the only advise I have is be ready for a special tool (like a #8 torx screw driver is needed for the 850's cluster) and see if you can buy new cluster backlight bulbs (as its a good time to freshen them all up).

OK got it and found the solution on this site. Seems that the service warning light which is triggered by the odometer sometimes hangs up the system. Solution was press in the service warning button a few times and also the mileage reset button and it works again. Also if necessary tell you how to replace the gears. Here is the site https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/faq/Ele...roken_Odometer

I wish the people that had my car before me would have got it fixed. They owned the car for 20 years and the odometer never worked for them and it stopped on 714390. So who knows it could be a million mile car for all I know.

We were able to buy a new odometer from Courtesy Volvo of Scottsdale. We had bought a new "gear" from ipdusa - a lot less expensive - had it installed and that was not the problem. Have not had the new odometer installed yet so I don't really know if that fixes the problem. Ours stopped working Dec of 2014 and I'm sure we've put a bunch of miles on since then. There is a way to set the new odometer to current miles. Any thoughts on how to figure out what the current mileage is? Good luck! And thanks for any advice.

You can reset it but it's labor and costly today, why would you want to? You have no way of knowing what the true mileage is--I'd leave it alone, and let's hope it fixes your problem.

What I was trying to find out is how find the true mileage. It is supposed to be doable from some mechanism to do with tire rotation. Thanks.

There is no way to find out the 'true' mileage on an older Volvo...

My odometer did not work and the speedo was twitchy, but when I opened it up, the gear was still intact. I did some research and found out it could be the counter chip (weird speedo behavior was the tip-off). Part number UAF2115 made by ITT. They're still available new from specialist vendors, and of course they're all over eBay, which is where I bought mine. You'll have to be handy with a soldering iron and careful when removing the old one; it's stuck in there good, you'll need a solder sucker and some patience. Mine worked perfectly after I replaced it.
