Default excessive engine cranking

hi!
I have 1994 Volvo 940 turbo wagon and it cranks the engine excessively before it starts.
in the morning, it starts right up, but after I stop the car for about one hour, it is hard to start and it drains the battery.
does any one knows how to fix this?
thank you.
hector.

Hard cold start: Coolant Temp Sensor--most likely reason.

Lev,
I've heard this suggestion a lot for hard cranking issues. Why exactly would this cause hard starting issues?

I personally found that vacuum leaks were my issue, especially in places where you don't expect. My 940 used to take a while to start, but I put a clamp on the hoses coming from the engine to the oil separator box and flame trap. Its been great ever since.

an S40 is a completely different car with a completely different engine and fuel injection system

it would be smart to test the fuel pressure, however. if its off, then your fuel pressure regulator is suspect.

Mod...wong, the reason the coolant sensor is often at fault for cold hard start is that the computer should signal for extra fuel in cold engine to get it started. If no such signal is coming, due to a bad sensor, computer does not send this extra fuel and it takes longer for enough fuel to trickle down and affect ignition.

If I read the post correctly, he is having trouble with warm starts. Cold starts are fine. For warm start issue, I would suspect the fuel pressure regulator. But as Pierce stated, check the fuel pressure.

Yes, the FPR is a good candidate for warm starts trouble. I was answering the Modifierwong's question re CTS in geneneral...
