Default fuel accumalator going bad?

my 1987 volvo station wagon 240 dl has a very strong smell not of gas but closer to nail polish remover. and gas gauge seems to go with each inch driven. when i got home from the store yesterday.it was down below the red.
my daughter whose car it used to be said it was probably the fuel accumalator. since she and a friend change it once before. she asked if it had any leaks. i said no. she said that was the way it did last time then it like dumped a big puddle of gas on the ground. well it hasnt done that yet.

question is how difficult is it to change and about how much is it going to cost me? and could it be any thing else? oh by the way she is really hard to start. no she is really hard stay started.

I'm not certain that a '87 240 DL even has an accumulator. Are you certain that you don't have any leaks, especially in the engine compartment? I once had a fuel return line break in my car and the gas gauge dropped quickly. Best to start looking for the cause of that smell.

thanks for replying coonmanxyz
thats what my daughter says it is. got the car from her.did the same thing with her, the smell and she couldnt find the leak either. like i said she and a friend replaced the accumalator.
talked to mechanic and he knew what i was talking about but dont know if he knew the car i was talking about. called the local "junk yard" and he had no idea of what i was talking about.
as for the gas gauge it didnt drop quickly it just went down as i drove along. i made it home. when my son in law gets home maybe we can look for leaks until then she stays parked. thanks again.

you mean fuel "fuel pressure regulator"? it can leak and cause gas smell... and hard starting when engine is warm.
