Default just bought a 93 940...with issues.

Hello all,

Just bought a 93 940 with 200k on it.

Im new to the volvo scene and i just had a few questions. The steering wheel shudderes when i brake, i was notified that the rear rotors are warped...even though they were replaced a year ago....something i should fix soon?

There is a loud click metal noise when i change gears ...it sounds like something is loose? any ideas? its quite noticable....and is worrying me...its loud.

The brakes make a sqeeling noise....not a big issue ..i think its just the quality of the pads but its annoying.

What should i use for oil...the owner said he put synthetic in it...and the size of wrench for the plug? I just changed the spark plugs and that went ok..its running great. Any maintenence things i should jump on....i just dont want to be caught out, the timing belt was changed..along with the spark plugs.

thanks all im very grateful for any help i can get.

check your universal joints they may have play and be making the loud cllick. yes replace warped rotors, that may fix your steering wheel issues too. I changed to volvo brand brake pads to rid myself of annoying but harmless squealing (fcpgroton)

Is it an automatic or a stick? I'll assume stick. The metal clicking noise when changing gears could be shift linkage. The bushings wear out. I would be surprised if your bushings are in good shape if they're original.

Check the front calipers for corrosion on the slide pinswhere the calipers move in and out when braking.

If these get frozen in place, it will cause the caliper to apply brake pressure to one side of the rotor only, resulting in warped rotors and bad vibration when braking.

You can buy the slide pins as a replacement item.

Just a hint

nice thanks guys. its a automatic.......so it wouldnt be the linkage. so im guessing the noise is the cv joints. well at any rate it looks like im doing a brake job. okay so. replace rotors and pads pretty much.

OK, automatic. I agree the loud click when changing gears is likely U-joints or center support on the driveshaft.

Brake job time. I don't fool around anymore with various pads. Just plain ol' Volvo rotors and pads. Tasca Volvo has good prices. tascavolvoparts.com Also FCP and IPD have good rotors and pads.
