Default Odometer repair done

HI Just wanted to let folks know that the odo problem that caused my '86 240 DL wagon to stop functioning at 294K miles was fixed by me with the suggestion of members here. I bought the single gear and the DVD with instructions from ipdusa. I was disbelieving of the testimonials saying how easy this this job was, since my local Volvo specialty shop quoted me a price of $450 and 2 days of work for them. But it took me less than 1 hr and was easy as pie! My hat is off to ipdusa for their excellent product, and thumbs down to the Volvo specialty shop here in Sacramento that apparently is charging an unconciounable amount for what is truly an easy job.

Glad to here everything worked out for you. I would consider finding a new Volvo shop because 450 dollars for the gear is a lot of money.

i have an 97 850 and my odometer also broke. The shop told me it'll be 300 to fix the gear cause they have to take apart the dash. Could send me a link or possibly instructions on how to replace the gear?

Volvospeed has a couple pages on removal of the instrument cluster. But it doesn't include replacement of the odo gear.

You'll find a lot of good instructions, tutorials, advice, and tips on volvospeed.com and matthewsvolvosite.com.

Make sure you get your mileage read BEFORE starting the repair. A Volvo Scan Tool is required for this at a Volvo dealer or independent Volvo repair shop. If they tell you it can't be done, don't believe them, they're either ignorant or don't want to do it. I had mine read at a Volvo dealership -- one dealer 15 miles from me quoted $107 to read it, but I got it read at another Volvo dealer 40 miles from me for $35 (now that's a headscratcher, huh?).

Matthewsvolvosite.com has a good DIY tutorial for odometer fix, checK their repair database, and/or use their search function.
Volvospeed.com has a number of good threads with excellent advice and tips, and some DIY posts, that offered better ways to do parts of the repair.
Instead of lifting up the driver's side corner of the dash cover to get the instrument cluster out, as described in the MVS DIY, I recommend removing the whole dash cover. Lifting just the corner of the dash cover makes it likely you'll bend out-of-shape the dashcover corner between the middle dash vents and the glovebox (like a lazy volvo tech did mine when replacing dash bulbs). Removing the entire dash cover is easy and negligible additional work (a few more screws/bolts).
For removing the entire dash cover, find the DIY by LiquidKernel ("Howto: Take Off Top Dash Cover" posted Apr 11, 2005 in the Cosmetic and Detailing forum) on Volvospeed.com.

i can only get the mileage on the engine, so should i put on? I had my engine replace with a sealed one about 10k ago. The body + tranny has around 185 the engine has 150 when I got it so it's around 160 now. or does it not matter
