The bulbs are removed from the rear of the cluster by turning 1/4 turn and removing. You can buy replacements here:

Volvo Instrument Light Bulb Halogen (240) Genuine Volvo 989809 | FCP Euro

I usually grab some bulbs when I am at the junkyard as $10 a bulb seems pricey to me.

Got my new 25T gear yesterday, installed it and the odometer works now! clicked over about 10 miles after work and it's good to go.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Well, shucks....I wrote a long post which just disappeared.

I am a wimp, and will likely be just taking this 1983 240 DL to my mechanic to have him work on the odometer, but just in case: trip odometer works fine, main odometer stuck at 229,999. I figured I would try just to mess with the speedometer cable, so I managed to reach back and unscrew the collar that holds the cable on.

Yes, now you know why I'm a wimp--I'm a lousy mechanic. I can't figure out how to get the collar screwed back on, it just doesn't seem to engage. Yes, I am turning in the correct direction...righty-tighty, lefty-loosy from the standpoint of my alter ego who is facing from the engine to the back of the car. And my shoulder is getting really sore from my reach.

Any suggestions will be welcomed....I guess otherwise, it's a trip to the mechanic even for the speedometer.....Thanks in advance.

Sometimes it's like that, a simple operation just becomes a big pain... This cable is sheathed, make sure the actual cable is not pushing against the speedo seat not allowing the nut to seat properly and engage the male part. Hopefully you haven't damaged the treads... Remember that the nut has to fit squarely onto the speedo part, any angle and it's a no-go...

I think it took a lot of turns to unscrew the nut originally, but try as I might, it seems to only be a partial turn--and I hope not cross-threaded. But at this point, not only is the speedometer working properly, but my original intent, which was to try to convince the odometer to turn over to the next 0000, has been achieved. Nice start to the year for this 36 year old car!

I took my speedometer cluster to R T Grim in Camp Hill PA - about 80 miles from where I live. 717-761-4113

They did a great job, apparently no problem getting parts.
